USB-C/Thunderbolt Port Test

Test all ports for data and power delivery

Bottom lineTest every USB-C/Thunderbolt port for all three functions: plug in a USB drive (it must mount in Finder), connect the charger (every port must charge), and if possible connect an external display. Ports that feel loose or work intermittently indicate physical damage and are expensive to repair.

  1. Identify Port Count

    MacBook Air has 2 ports, MacBook Pro 14/16 has 3, and older models may vary

  2. Test Data Transfer

    Connect a USB drive to each port and verify it mounts correctly in Finder

  3. Test Charging

    Connect the charger to each USB-C port. All ports should charge the MacBook

  4. Test Display Output

    If you have an external display, test connecting it to each Thunderbolt port

Tip: Loose ports or intermittent connections may indicate physical damage. Test each port multiple times.
